One of the most common questions we see when clients are building their strategies and accounts is “When do I see any ROI on my social media?” As an entrepreneur or small business owner, it might be assumed that once your business hops on to social media you’ll see an immediate uptick in sales. While quick returns may be the case for some businesses, patience is necessary while building a community.
Nothing Happens Overnight
Social media can be a slow process for generating any ROI. It generally takes 5-7 touch points with a customer before they consider buying from you. Typically, it takes even longer as they spend large amounts of time gathering information before they purchase. Social media creates long-term benefits as you are working to establish yourself as an authority in your field.
It’s About Relationships
Social media is used to build relationships and community. When you’re starting on the ground floor, it might take a little longer for a customer to trust you. Through consistent interaction, you’re allowing them to get to know you and your brand – and those relationships take time. Think about it – building a real-life friendship takes time. Building a relationship on social media also takes time, if not more because we don’t often see our customers face to face.
Try and Try Again
Sometimes the things you want to share with your audience will leave you hearing crickets when you were expecting it all to go viral. So, try again and share something else. Sometimes you have to test different outlets if you aren’t seeing the results you want. For example, maybe your best customers aren’t on Facebook. If they’re young, they might frequent Snapchat. Don’t be afraid to try different platforms. If your customers aren’t responding in the way you like, go back to the drawing board! Maybe it’s your Facebook Ad copy, maybe it’s the photo on your landing page, or your email sequence is off. Don’t let pride stop you from going back and trying again.
Don’t Compare Yourself to Others
It’s easy to fall down the rabbit hole of comparison when you see people bragging about their business. You don’t know the path they’ve taken to see success in their business. They’ve likely failed and had to try again themselves. Often, they’ve started with no email list and built from the ground up, just like you are now.
Remember you won’t go from zero to 10,000 followers overnight, that’s not how social media works. Your social media marketing efforts are something that you have to build and nurture over time. After some time and effort, you’ll discover that your social media campaigns have grown into something more substantial. Your social media efforts establish you as an authority in your field. Don’t rush the results. Be patient. It’ll be worth the wait.
